Local Organizations Name INCPAS Members to Boards

Both boards and CPAs benefit from INCPAS CPAs Lead the Way program

INDIANAPOLIS – Two Indiana CPA Society members recently were appointed to boards/committees of Indiana non-profit organizations. Stephen Combs with The Controllership Group in Fishers joined the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana’s (DII) board of directors. Greg Bernhardt with Greenwalt Sponsel & Co., Inc. in Indianapolis was recently appointed to the Indiana Council for Economic Education’s (ICEE) executive committee. Combs and Bernhardt both reside in Indianapolis.

DII and ICEE submitted requests for accounting professionals to serve on their boards through CPAs Lead the Way. The Indiana CPA Society’s CPAs Lead the Way program is a free service that aims to match CPAs in leadership positions with Indiana not-for-profits and civic organizations. The Society acts as a liaison between the organizations and CPAs by posting board member openings in publications that reach more than 7,000 Indiana CPAs.

Combs saw the DII board opportunity in the Society’s e-newsletter whereas Bernhardt came across the ICEE opportunity on the CPAs Lead the Way web page. “When I began searching the INCPAS web site for volunteer opportunities, I was immediately drawn to the open executive committee position with ICEE,” said Bernhardt. “In this position, I saw the potential for mutual benefit; ICEE would benefit from my dual background in accounting and finance and I would have the opportunity to serve an organization centered around a purpose for which I have a true passion.”

DII, located in Indianapolis, provides direct educational services to children, adolescents and adults with specific learning disabilities characteristic of dyslexia, promotes strengthened awareness and understanding of the language disorder, and advocates for the appropriate and timely treatment of those with dyslexia.

Bernhardt joined ICEE's executive committee in December. This organization prepares students to become active citizens and productive members of the economy by providing them with the ability to make sound economic decisions.

As with many not-for-profits, both DII and ICEE were looking for individuals to join a variety of committees. Members of boards know their business/organization will benefit from a CPA’s financial and business advice and expertise. Having a CPA on a board not only assists organizations in financial planning; it gives the CPA recognition among their peers, potential clients and employers.

“CPAs should be interested in supporting economic and personal financial education by nature of their calling,” said Beverly Brewer, director of development and public relations for ICEE. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to include Bernhardt in our organization and look forward to his involvement.”
