IUPUI Wins Tenth Annual INCPAS Case Study Competition
INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis was awarded first place in the Indiana CPA Society's annual Case Study Competition. The University of Southern Indiana, five-time defending champions, placed second, while Indiana University captured third place. The three remaining finalists, Bethel College, Purdue University Calumet and Saint Mary's College, each earned honorable mention awards.
In this year's INCPAS Case Study Competition, student teams analyzed the effect of the economy on a fictitious CPA firm. It was the tenth time the Society has held the competition, with the case topic changing each year. Teams from all Indiana colleges and universities with accounting departments were invited to compete. In 2009, 13 schools participated.
The four-student teams had 10 days beginning Sept. 18 to submit written cases. A panel of four judges reviewed entries and selected six teams to travel to Indianapolis for oral presentations on Oct. 16. Other schools participating but not advancing to the finals were Anderson University, Ball State University, Butler University, Indiana University South Bend, Manchester College, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and Valparaiso University. Cash awards were given to members of all finalist teams.
The first place team from IUPUI received $1,000 per student. USI and IU team members received $750 and $500 each respectively. Fourth through sixth place team members each received $100.
The winning team from IUPUI included Chad W. Beauchamp, III, John-Paul W. Felter, David C. Lane, and Molly Utterback. John Hassell and Eric Johnson were the faculty advisors.
The second place team from USI consisted of Matt Garza, Jamie Perry, Anna Shade and David Ubelhor. The faculty advisor was Jeanette Maier-Lytle.
The third place team from IU included Annie Feeks, Mary Koser, Sam Mynsberge, James Seever. The faculty advisor was Mikel Tiller.
The judges for the oral presentation included Jason Bainter, CPA, Somerset CPAs, Indianapolis, Brandon Cook, CPA, Greenwalt Sponsel & Co., Indianapolis, Beth Pagett, CPA, BKD, LLP, Indianapolis, and Deborah Maldeney, CPA, Murphy, McClary, Stover & Burnett, LLC, Carmel.
Several contributors provided funding for the cash awards. The Gold sponsors contributing $1,000 were Hillenbrand Inc./Batesville Casket Company and Kemper CPA Group. Crowe Horwath LLP contributed $750 as the Silver sponsor. The Bronze sponsors contributing $500 were Bucheri McCarty & Metz LLP, Umbaugh, CAMICO and LM Henderson & Company, LLP.
