INCPAS Chair Kyle Simmerman, CPA, reflects on the importance of the Society’s
partnerships and collaboration efforts.
What are some of the
key takeaways from your
discussions with members at
INCPAS Town Halls this year?
I was really encouraged by the discussions we
had. The passion and care INCPAS members
have for the CPA profession is deep. Every
conversation led back to people. Our profession
is built on people of high integrity and quality,
and we have to work to expand opportunities to
those who want to join our profession—as well
as retain those already here.
What were the most valuable
insights from AICPA Council
in Atlanta, and how do you
see them impacting the
Society?
Everyone is trying to figure out how to navigate
the 150-hour rule. The AICPA took a big step
forward in their willingness to move away
from the current path, but there is work to do
among the AICPA, state societies, NASBA and
others on how to move forward together—this
puts current and future members, employers
and our entire ecosystem in a better place.
However, it is clear there are very divergent
views on the paths we can choose from. I am
proud that INCPAS is a leader in this arena
and is collaborating with key stakeholders to
chart our path forward.
What are you looking
forward to with INCPAS’ new
partnership with NABA?
Charting a course together. It is exciting! I can’t
wait to see how it impacts our organization
and members and elevates both organizations.
They say a rising tide lifts all boats, and I very
much believe both organizations are lifting
each other up to new heights.
How will collaboration
between INCPAS and
stakeholders like the Indiana
Department of Revenue,
Board of Accountancy and
legislators shape the future
of the CPA profession in
Indiana over the next year?
We are fortunate to have great local
relationships with our key stakeholders.
Advocacy is a top priority for INCPAS and an
area where we provide substantial value for
members. These relationships position us to
not only have a voice, but also to listen. It is
important for us to continue to do the work of
building strong relationships so we have a seat
at the table.
How can INCPAS members
get involved in these
initiatives?
As part of the AICPA’s National Pipeline
Advisory Group report and INCPAS efforts,
we encourage members to promote the
profession to high school and college
students. INCPAS provides significant, datadriven
materials you can leverage, as well
as opportunities to speak in classrooms and
share your story. Your time will make a
difference in attracting new members to
our profession. I’ve spoken to many people
who have participated in these visits, and
they have echoed how much they enjoyed
it and got back from the students as much
as they gave.
There are also many opportunities to serve
on INCPAS committees. In addition to
having remarkable staff at INCPAS, we are
very fortunate to have so many committed
member volunteers. Thank you to everyone
who volunteers—you are shaping the future
for INCPAS. If you want to get involved, go to
incpas.org/Volunteer for more information.
We’d love to see you at a future committee
meeting or event!
