Sep 10, 2024

How do you envision the future of the accounting profession, and what role will INCPAS play in it?

Photo of Kyle Simmerman“I envision the future of the accounting profession to be an agile industry that has the ability to adapt to (and lead) change. I see organizations having fundamental ways to operate that encourages being inquisitive, creative and forward-thinking. Our ecosystem is so broad for our members and key stakeholders that we need more flexible systems for how we operate. And this is not just in public firms—it’s for all members of our profession both at an organizational and individual level. We are all so critical to the financial markets, our clients/employer and the general public, and that is not going away—it’s accelerating. INCPAS has an exciting opportunity to play a significant role in the future of our profession. We are continually adapting to member needs and leading on key areas in our strategic plan. Through member feedback INCPAS can provide resources, training and the advocacy needed to propel the profession forward.”

Cloud computing, data analytics, advisory services, and increased automation will greatly affect the success of our members. Those who embrace technology, focus on strategic advisory roles, and continuously update their knowledge will be better equipped to thrive. INCPAS is well-positioned to assist our members in these areas. We also strive to advocate for the interests of our members at the state and national levels. We work hard to influence regulatory changes and help shape policies that support the profession’s adaptation to new technologies and practices. We will continue to support our members through education, advocacy and resources to help them succeed in the changing landscape of the accounting profession.”

There will be ongoing challenges due to the shortage of people entering our profession and the constantly changing business environment, but these challenges will be offset by the changes and improvement on how we use technology, most notably automation and artificial intelligence. INCPAS will continue to play an important role, bringing our members together to collaborate and learn on how to best utilize these new technologies.”

Photo of Corbin L. Miller, CPA, CGMA“With the number of people entering the accounting profession declining, it is important to embrace technology. While many large corporations and accounting firms are already doing this, many smaller corporations and accounting firms are still evaluating their options. It will be critical for the accounting profession to effectively evaluate and implement technology in order to keep up with the demand for current and relevant information. INCPAS can connect businesses with appropriate vendors and education to help them stay up-to-date on technology that helps meet stakeholder demand.”

I envision a future where the accounting profession embraces greater diversity, not only in terms of gender and race but also in the breadth of specialized areas and skillsets, driven by the integration and influence of AI. INCPAS is poised to lead this transformation on a national scale, particularly through its collaborative initiatives with organizations like NABA, ALPFA, Accounting+, and other professional partners. This commitment to inclusivity and innovation positions INCPAS as a trailblazer in fostering a dynamic and evolving accounting landscape.”
