Troy McAlister, CPA
Associate Director, Financial Reporting & Analytics – Indiana University
Congratulations on your recent promotion! How long have you worked at IU? What is your favorite part of your job?
Thank you! I’ve worked at IU for about two years now. What makes my job really special are the energetic and passionate people I get to work with. I also love being a part of the direct impact our work has on the lives of our students, Hoosiers and the state of Indiana. It’s truly rewarding to be part of an organization that makes a positive impact in communities!
You studied abroad in England during college, and later interned for The Walt Disney Company in Orlando, FL. Tell us more about your experiences and how they laid the groundwork for your love of travel.
These experiences were incredible opportunities that shaped my passion for travel. Living in historic Harlaxton Manor in England exposed me to diverse cultures and taught me valuable life lessons. I explored the streets of London, immersed myself in the vibrant culture of Edinburgh and ventured to the picturesque countryside of Italy while I was there.
During my internship at The Walt Disney Company, I witnessed the power of storytelling that transcends borders and brings joy to people worldwide. The experience reinforced my appreciation for cultural diversity and the importance of creating meaningful connections with people from different backgrounds.
Where are you in your photo, and who are you with?
This is my girlfriend, Kacie, and we’re at Blarney Castle during our recent trip to Ireland.
You’re part of INCPAS’ Young Pros Leadership Academy (YPLA). What has been your favorite part of the cohort?
YPLA has been an incredible experience. It offers young CPAs a platform to sharpen their leadership skills, define career goals and expand their professional network. The most valuable part for me has been the opportunity to learn from industry leaders, and connect with new people in similar roles but who have different perspectives to share.
You regularly attend INCPAS young pros events. Do you have any advice for others interested in getting more involved with the Society?
Embrace opportunities to engage with the Society and your professional community! Attend INCPAS events, join a member section and actively participate in discussions. Building relationships and contributing to the profession will enrich your career and personal growth.
What’s your favorite app?
I logged over 1,000 hours on Spotify last year, so that’s definitely my most-used and favorite app. An honorable mention goes to Google Maps because I’m not good with directions!
What is the best thing you’ve read recently?
“Atomic Habits” by James Clear. It’s all about how small habits can lead to big changes in our lives. I found it super practical and inspiring.
