1/20 Advocacy Alert: Tell Congress to Provide Tax Filing Relief Measures

Jan 20, 2022

We are asking Members of Congress to support filing relief for what will be another difficult tax season, both for taxpayers and the IRS — and we need your help.

Please email your U.S. Representative and both Senators today with a brief introduction of who you are and share this letter outlining the coalition's concerns and recommendations. You can find your Representative’s and Senators’ contact information at congress.gov/members.

Please also forward or cc your messages to INCPAS VP-Advocacy Sherrill Rude, CAE, at srude@incpas.org with a subject line of "IRS Coalition Letter."

See below for the letter INCPAS sent to Indiana Congressional representatives. You can also share this letter with your tax clients — at the point of engagement or in your firm's newsletter — to underscore the challenges with this tax season and your efforts to help fix them at the source.

IRS Services Letter to IN Delegates
Re:  Coalition Letter to IRS
Attachment:  Coalition Letter

Dear <Chief of Staff>,

I am asking you to share the attached 2022 Taxpayer Relief Coalition letter with <Legislator Name>. There is a critical need for immediate taxpayer relief action by the IRS.

We, the Indiana CPA Society and our members, have reached out to <Legislator Name> several times during the pandemic to bring awareness to the serious issues taxpayers and CPAs who service taxpayers are encountering with IRS services. However, things are not improving.

As we set out to begin the third tax season burdened by the pandemic, the IRS itself predicts chaos, stating the agency is “under no illusions that it’s going to go smoothly.” Simply put, the IRS continues to send erroneous notices of liability to taxpayers because returns are not being processed in a timely manner. The backlog of amended returns and inability to provide accurate transcripts are now trickling down to state tax returns, affecting Hoosiers even further. Reasonable relief would remove the onerous task of response from taxpayers and practitioners.

We’re asking – alongside our colleagues – that <Legislator Name> consider the attached 2022 Taxpayer Relief Coalition Letter. Sent last week to both The Honorable Lily Batchelder, Asst. Secretary (Tax Policy) and The Honorable Charles Rettig, IRS Commissioner, the letter outlines reasonable penalty relief measures that the IRS can offer immediately. We strongly support the recommendations put forth in the letter.

On behalf of the 7,100 members of the Indiana CPA Society, and the CPA profession we appreciate any support <Legislator Name> could provide for the recommendations for taxpayer relief. Thank you for understanding how these issues are adversely affecting taxpayers in Indiana and for supporting measures to remedy the issues.

If you have any questions or need more information, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Courtney J. Kincaid, CAE, IOM
