Amy Northard, CPA
Owner – The Accountant for Creatives
What is the best thing you’ve read recently?
“The E-Myth Accountant” by Michael Gerber really helped me wrap my head around hiring and outsourcing.
What’s your favorite app and why?
Instagram. It not only serves as my creative outlet (@amynorthardcpa), but I’ve been able to create connections and friendships with clients and potential clients through it. I’m able to show a little more personal side of the business and that I’m not scary or intimidating.
How did you get started specifically working with creatives?
I’ve always had a creative side myself. When I started imagining how I could continue using my CPA license and feel fulfilled, I thought it would be fun to work with the bloggers who inspired me and the creative small businesses I was following on Instagram.
What’s the significance of the wooden calculator you’re holding in your picture?
When I took the picture, it was just a cute prop, but now it has come to symbolize that we’re not your traditional accounting firm.
Why did you decide to become a CPA?
A big part of the reason I became a CPA was that my dad told me it was a safe, secure job. Then I fell in love with being a CPA once I started working with clients who inspired me on a daily basis.
What is your favorite part of your job?
I love taking the stress and scariness out of the financial part of owning a business.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the profession?
It doesn’t hurt to think outside of the box when it comes to your career.
How do you unwind after a busy day?
I love going on walks outside with my husband and son, when weather permits.
