You are a frequent traveler—where are you in your photo?

Hiking Lanikai Pillbox on Oahu, Hawaii.

What is your favorite part of your job?

The greatest satisfaction comes from realizing my work directly affects my family. My sister is currently pursuing her commercial pilot’s license at LIFT Academy, and another sister is working as a travel nurse in Arizona. Thanks to the flight benefits, we manage to stay in touch more frequently than we would have without them.

You attend INCPAS’ Young Pros Leadership Academy (YPLA). What has been your top takeaway of the cohort so far?

Delegation vs. dumping. As I moved into overseeing staff, this was a crucial lesson that arrived at the perfect moment. When you delegate tasks, you’re typically empowering an individual to use their abilities and provide them with an opportunity to develop and assist. Offloading (or dumping) involves assigning someone a task you’d rather not handle yourself.

Can you share your best CPA Exam study tip?

Start your studies early. It takes some getting used to, but when you make it your priority, it clears up your schedule and ensures you’re getting ahead, regardless of what the rest of the day brings.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the profession?

Feedback is a crucial tool for advancing in your career. Instead of putting off annual evaluations or going through official procedures, make it a habit to regularly check in with the people you frequently work with.

You’re an IHSAA referee for high school girls’ basketball. What did it take to earn that role?

The short answer is a certification. The officiating community is centered on making connections, and I first became involved in IHSAA officiating through a colleague who had learned about my experience officiating AAU youth games on weekends. During the summer, I dedicate time to working closely with clinicians to finetune my knowledge.

How do you unwind after a busy day? Any hobbies?

Kayaking is a passion of mine, and I make it a point to visit Eagle Creek as frequently as I can. It’s my travels, however, that bring me the greatest happiness—I make it a priority to take a trip every month. Thanks to Republic, the benefits of travel have taken me to incredible destinations including the Netherlands, Japan, Switzerland, Australia, Spain and numerous cities across the U.S.

What is the best book you’ve read lately?

“Unreasonable Hospitality” by Will Guidara.
